Most Secret Desire

I have been pondering on this quote lately. It cuts right through the heart.

"If each of us were to confess his most secret desire, the one that inspires all his plans, all his actions, he would say, 'I want to be praised.' "
--- E. M. Cioran

My motives are never pure. I am reminded of how much I need the Spirit to guide, direct and cleanse me. In the end I want my life count for God.

This quote says it all. So true... that is why knowing God is so important. Like the author Donald Miller who said, we were created to have someone else tell us our value. It is true. And that is why we need to hear and beleive what God says about us...
that we are loved, worthy to recieve his grace and valuable beyond compare. Thank you LORD!

Hi Wendy! I'm glad to find your blog.
The quote, or you, are so right, if keep digging, we can never have pure motives apart from God, or even when we are serving Him. Praise Lord for He is God who finds no fault.

Hmm.

I think Cioran is right. But if every single one of us has this desire and motive to be praised, perhaps the Scriptures have something to say on it.

1Thess2:6 tells us that when Paul, Silas and Timothy were doing the great work of founding the Thesselonian church, they "were not looking for praise from men". Their motives were found elsewhere, praise from men was not good enough. But why is it wrong to seek praise from men?

John12:42-43 tells us why, and it says that loving praise from men comes from fearing man, rather than God. That's why it is wrong.

But perhaps that truth is also true conversely - that is, whereas fearing man leads to loving praise from men, fearing God leads to loving praise from God. Could it be so, and could it be right?

Romans2:28-29 tells us about the true, inward Jew (and God will indeed regard us as such Jews). It says that his praise is from God! I couldn't believe it when I saw it, but it actually says that God praises such a person.

Jesus takes it a step further. (He's pretty awesome that way.) In John5:41-44 he criticizes certain religious leaders not only for seeking praise from one another, but for making no effort to seek praise from God. He is rebuking them for not seeking praise from the best possible source!

So perhaps this secret, inmost desire was placed in each of us by our loving Father, so that we, his dear children, might seek to please him and be praised by him.

Praise be to the Lord our God!
